Sustainability is at the heart of Beko plc’s R&D activities, supporting parent company Arçelik to maintain its world leading position in terms of lowest water consumption, noise power level and best energy efficiency home appliances.

Current Beko R&D projects include: novel refrigeration technologies to enhance energy efficiency and remove refrigerant gases, scouting for new materials to improve sustainability (e.g. improve insulation, incorporate recycled components) and innovative machine designs to increase performance and reduce energy consumption. In addition, building on Arçelik’s first ever washing machine with built-in micro-plastic filter, we are collaborating with a UK partner to evaluate their innovative micro-plastic filter design in our washing machines.

Sensors are at the core of our future product development, unlocking new features and products for the home through monitoring of appliances and the environment. Providing effective sensing also requires supporting analytics to accurately assess the data and act on the results.  Therefore our work involves not only evaluation of the sensors themselves, but also the development the data analytics to support their operation for the product or feature in question.

We work closely with Arçelik’s Sensor Technologies team based in Istanbul, scouting for collaborators developing new sensor technologies to support our ongoing projects at Arçelik as well as in-house feasibility projects at Beko R&D.  Current Beko R&D projects include the assessment of novel gas sensing technologies for food decay and air quality monitoring, computer vision, RFID and radar sensing.

The smart home looks beyond individual connected products towards an ecosystem of wirelessly connected devices, sensors and supporting data analytics to monitor and automate home functions.

Beko R&D activities support the development of new features for the smart home through feasibility assessment of new IoT technologies and identification of collaborators to support their development.
